Camp Hale, CO / LeadVille, CO / Vail, CO

We camped in Camp Hale were a militar division was trained for World War II. The only division that has ever been trained for cold weather, ski, climb.

Marks post in his facebook “Camp Hale info. 14,500 soldiers were trained there for winter warfare along with 5000 mules and 200 dogs. 990 soldiers were killed and 4000 were wounded. These were very high rates which indicates the extreme situations they were put into. 10th mountain soldiers went on to found Aspen, Vail and other ski resorts.”

We have done many things here at LeadVille. We went to town because we don’t get signal at the campground and Mark worked from a nice coffee shop. We also went to the National Mining museum which had an area set up like inside of a mine and were scary, noises would turn on when you walked inside, it seemed more like a hunted house.

One of the days we hiked to fancy lake, yeah that is the name. Not sure if Mark knew how long it was going to take us. The previous day we did a small hike near the campground but this hike took us about 4 hours. Most of the hike was kind of steep. I got somewhat tired and ate my snacks and some of Marks. I almost didn’t go all the way to the lake. Once we got there it was beautiful but so sad we couldn’t stay and enjoy because it seemed that it was going to rain. We hurried up down hill. I was so glad to be done, i don’t think I was prepared for that hike.

The weekend was Leadville boom days festival. They celebrate the history of Leadville. They had booths and some people were dressed in long dresses like in old days. We just walked around and head to the matchless mine tour. You couldn’t go inside the mine because it was flooded for years but they gave us a long explanation and in the entrance they had water in a tank where you could panned gold. Mark loved it and were there for a while, he got a little tiny piece but hey, that was better than nothing. After that we went to the mineral belt trail which is 11.6 miles. Mark ran it and I rode my bike. It was most of it down hill. I ended up walking at the end up hill. After our workout we had pizza I baked oatmeal cookies and head out to look for elks. At the campground someone told us that around sunset we could find elks. We walked without luck until we saw a big dear from far away. Good thing that Mark had his binoculars because I can’t see that far. He was an 8 point buck.
